Recreational Therapy, sometimes referred to as “food & fun” is taken very seriously at DOJ. There’s something going on somewhere in the building seven days a week for everyone. Our spacious auditorium on the main floor houses an open recreation area with ping pong, pool, pinball machines and an “old time” jukebox. We also have a gift shop and a canteen with snacks and sandwiches where residents and visitors alike can shop and relax on premises.
Work Therapy.
Our Sheltered Workshop gives residents a chance to provide some useful services around the premises and earn a stipend. This not only provides them with a little spending money, it gives them useful tasks to perform that help develop and enhance self-esteem.
Religious Services for all.
Spiritual and cultural observances are an important part of resident life at DOJ. So in order to accommodate the religious needs of our diverse family, clergy of various denominations conduct weekly services on premises.
No home would be complete without pets.
We have three generations of Shih-Tzu’s, fish tanks, a cat (that wears lipstick), finches, chinchillas, rabbits, incubating chicks and a parrot that likes to whistle at the ladies. Our house pets are extremely popular at DOJ. And the love these pets show our residents is always returned in kind. They are just part of the scene at DOJ, but they make a huge contribution towards improving the quality of life for everyone.
Other regular activities include:
- In-house movies
- Men’s and women’s clubs
- Talent shows
- Live entertainment
- Monthly birthday parties
- Recreational trips
- Religious services
- Computer accessibility
- Direct Satellite TV
- Book and magazine library
- Spring Gardening Club
A kitchen that adds a little spice to life at DOJ.
Our head chef is a graduate of the renowned Culinary Institute, and his meals appeal to the wide ethnic diversity of our residents. The meals are varied and tasty, especially on “Ethnic Days” when we honor different groups by serving special dishes along with related entertainment. The mantra at DOJ is “eat well, have fun and enjoy a new experience every day.”
